TALAKTO DISTRICT UNIT AWARDS REQUEST 2018-2019

1.IMPORTANT!! THE UNIT LEADER AWARD OF MERIT AND DISTRICT AWARD OF MERIT NOMINATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY THURSDAY, 1 NOVEMBER 2018 TO ALLOW TIME FOR REVIEW BY THE NOMINATING COMMITTEE. SEE PARAGRAPHS 4 AND 5, BELOW. NOMINATIONS SUBMITTED AFTER 1 NOVEMBER 2018 MAY NOT BE CONSIDERED FOR AWARD THIS YEAR.
2.Please check the following Unit Awards for which you qualify. Note those awards requiring a signed application. Please submit as soon as possible, but NO LATER THAN 15 DECEMBER 2018 to Jim Charlton, District Commissioner and Awards POC, Curtis Hunt, North Area Team Leader, or to either Carol or Kay at the Scout Service Center. AWARD NOMINATIONS SUBMITTED AFTER 15 DECEMBER 2018 MIGHT NOT BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS YEAR due to processing time or be recognized in the program.

B. 100% BOYS’ LIFE AWARD: ________ (NOTE: This award submission is also verified on the Recharter paperwork.)
C. JOURNEY TO EXCELLENCE AWARD: ________ (NOTE: These forms should be submitted with Unit Awards request or recharter packet (but no later than 4 January 2019) and MUST be signed by your Primary Leader, Committee Chair, AND respective Commissioner.)
D. NATIONAL DEN AWARD: (NOTE: Application MUST be submitted in advance.)
E. NATIONAL SUMMERTIME PACK AWARD: ________ (NOTE: Application MUST be on file or submitted with the Unit Awards request.)
F. NATIONAL OUTDOOR CHALLENGE AWARD: _________ (NOTE: Application MUST be submitted and signed by Scoutmaster/Advisor, Senior Patrol Leader AND Commissioner or District Camping Chair.)
3.The following is the list of available adult leader awards: Den Leader Award (Device will designated program level earned, including Tiger, Cub Scouts, or Webelos) – note: only one block may be checked on each application and tenure can only be used for one award; Scouter’s Key (Awarded for Cubmasters, Scoutmasters and Venturing Advisor and note that all have 3-year tenure requirements); and Scouter’s Training Award for either Cub Scout, Boy Scout, or Venturing program (2-year tenure). Please submit completed progress report(verified and signed by Unit Committee Chair) for each award request for the adult leaders who qualify for theabove Individual Awards. Awards for Arrowhead Honor; Commissioner’s Key; Distinguished Commissioner’sAward; District Committee Key; William D. Boyce New Unit Organizer Award; and Veteran’s Awards will bereviewed and approved at District level. PLEASE NOTE THAT A TRAINING PROGRESS REPORT(VERIFIED AND SIGNED BY UNIT COMMITTEE CHAIR) MUST BE SUBMITTED FOR EACH UNIT LEADER AWARD REQUEST.
REMEMBER — Only ONE Leader can receive an award for each den – credit will NOT be given for “CO-DEN LEADERS”. Also, understand that tenure is credited only against one award per program level. If you are REGISTERED at two program levels (e.g., Cubs and Boy Scouts), tenure can be used for awards in each program. For Veterans’ Awards that must be submitted to National (25 years and up), make sure you submit the actual form to the Scout Office for processing, and NOT with the Unit Awards request. Better yet, submit to Jim Charlton by end of October and he will ensure to submit it and follow-up to avoid it getting lost!! If you submit separately and want recognition at the District Banquet, please ensure you notify Jim Charlton. He does not get that information otherwise! Submit the <25 year awards with the unit awards request, with required forms.
4.UNIT LEADER AWARD OF MERIT – THIS IS FOR CUBMASTERS, SCOUTMASTERS, VARSITY COACHES, AND VENTURING ADVISORS. Unit Leader Awards of Merit need to be submitted to the District Awards Committee, so they can be reviewed and processed in time by Council. Please submit EARLY (by mid-October) to allow plenty of process time if you want the award presented at the District Banquet. Note that the nomination MUST be signed by the UNIT COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN and certified by the UNIT OR DISTRICT COMMISSIONER. For troops, Teams, and Crews, it also requires a letter from the Senior Patrol Leader, Team Captain, or Crew President, respectively.
5.THE DISTRICT AWARD OF MERIT IS NOMINATED ON SEPARATE FORM (SEE WEBSITE). THE DISTRICT AWARD OF MERIT NOMINATIONS ARE CONFIDENTIAL. SUBMIT EACH IN A SEALED ENVELOPE ADDRESSED TO JIM CHARLTON OR CURTIS. BE SURE TO REVIEW THE REQUIREMENTS CAREFULLY FOR THE AWARD ON THE NOMINATION FORM. THESE AWARDS ARE FOR NOTEWORTHY SERVICE TO YOUTH IN SCOUTING, OUTSIDE SCOUTING, OR BOTH, AND ARE NOT APPROVED WITHOUT INTENSE SCRUTINY BY THE COMMITTEE. PLEASE SEE THE REQUIREMENTS SECTION ON THE BACK OF THE NOMINATION FORM. Likewise, although those on the Review Committee are senior Scouters, they do not necessarily know everyone in the District. As such,please ensure you have PLENTY OF DETAILS about the ACCOMPLISHMENTS of the nominated individual on attached sheets with the nomination form. Bottom line – please take the appropriate time to properly recognize deserving leaders.

Finally, the District Awards Banquet will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church on Saturday, 19 January 2019. Tickets should go on sale hopefully starting at the November Roundtable – price TBD.
