Birmingham Veteran’s Day Parade

Saturday, November 11, 2017

The Birmingham Veterans Day Parade is a great opportunity to create life-long memories for all Scouts by demonstrating our patriotism and love for flag and country in the nation’s largest and oldest Veterans Day parade, which started in 1947. Scouts are invited to walk in the parade and packs, troops, and crews are invited to enter floats. We’re encouraging maximum participation this year to ensure we have enough Boy Scouts volunteering to provide 55 flag carriers.

Veterans will be counting on our Scouts to carry flags to honor them on this day. Scouts have the time-honored tradition of being state flag carriers and they enjoy being at the front of the parade!

If your troop or individual Boy Scouts desire to be flag carriers, please assemble at the intersection of 19th Street North and 8th Avenue North, no later than 12:30 P.M. Flag carriers must be in full and correct uniform.  We will also need six Scout leaders in uniform to guide the flag formation and ensure safety.

The flag formation will be followed by troops and then packs. Similar to last year, Scouts will be expected to walk the 1.5-mile casual pace parade route. Since the American flag and Alabama flag will be included in the leading Scout formation, please ONLY march with your Troop or Pack unit flag.

Pick-up trucks with Cub Scouts inside and/or decorated trailers being towed are highly encouraged. A theme should be Scout Pack and/or Patriotic. For safety reasons, pick-ups will form at the back of the Scout contingent.

The point of contact for the flag formation is Rick DeFilippo, Cub Master Pack 326, (205) 823-3000 or . In your email, please use subject line (all capital letters): “SCOUT VETERANS DAY FLAG FORMATION.”

For units that are interested in participating in the parade please contact David Self at or 205-540-2302.
