The Boy Scouts of America is dedicated to developing leaders of character by preparing young men and women for life by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law. While operating costs have increased every year, the national organization has worked to keep the annual membership fee as low as possible by subsidizing core costs, including liability insurance BSA must carry to cover all official Scouting activities. Unfortunately, the national council is no longer able to subsidize at the level it has in the past, especially as the cost of insurance has increased dramatically.
To ensure the resources to fulfill the promise of Scouting despite increasing operating costs, the National Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of America has made the difficult but necessary decision to increase the annual membership fee for the 2020 program year.
Effective January 1st, these fees are now:
- $60 / $5 a month for youth members in Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturing and Sea Scouts,
- $36 / $3 a month for youth members in Exploring, and
- $36 / $3 a month for adult members
The Unit Charter fee, typically paid by the Chartering organization, has also increased to $60 annually. These new fees will show up in the online re-charter system on November 1st. As before, no portion of the national membership fee remains within the Greater Alabama Council. For more information as well as answers to some frequently asked questions, please visit our website.
We understand that this national fee increase may be challenging for some families and we are glad to offer financial aid to those in need whose unit or chartering organization are unable to help. To assist with registration, event fees, and other aspects of our programs, we have broadened our support systems for youth, adults, and units alike.
